Cleaning House

Zechariah 13 continues the theme established in chapter 12:  “on that day” the LORD will reestablish his reign over his chosen people who have been in exile for years and years.  This restoration includes significantly negative consequences for the political and religious leadership of the people.

In That Day

Zechariah 12 contains the oracles from the LORD that speak of the coming day of his reign.  These prophecies have been applied both by Christians and Jews to different contexts, but the recurrent theme is set by the term, "on that day."

A new section of the prophecy begins with Zechariah 9.  The worshipful tone sounds rather like the Psalms.  Worship is an important component here, not only in language of praise for the LORD, but also in warning against false worship.

In Zechariah 8:18-23, we read an interesting prophecy.  Now that the Temple will be rebuilt and the hearts of the people are drawn to the LORD, the focus of life changes.
